Protect Yourself from Repair Scams

After a storm or disaster, good workers show up to help. Sadly, scammers show up too.

Before you hire anyone for roof, tree, driveway, home, or property repairs, slow down. Some scammers do this as a full-time job. They move from town to town, take money, and disappear before they can be held accountable.

Do not rely only on online reviews, website photos, or social media pictures. Beware of the bots. Reviews can be fake. Photos can be copied or AI-generated. Call references. Ask neighbors. Ask to see the local work they have completed.

Before work begins, ask for a certificate of insurance showing your name and property address. This helps confirm they have active insurance for the job being done at your home.

Get everything in writing. The agreement should clearly state the work being done, the final cost, and when payment is due.

Take photos before, during, and after the job.

Never pay the full amount up front. A deposit may be normal, but final payment should wait until the work is complete and you are satisfied.

Cash is not king here. When possible, pay by check or credit card so there is a record.

Slow down. Check twice. Protect your home and your money.
