Our Story

1955 - 1976

ESCO Insurance Agency is a third generation family business. What began in 1955 as a humble “one-man-job” desk insurance agency within a bank, has evolved into a trusted name in the insurance industry.

The early roots of ESCO were planted by John (Jack) Comiskey Sr. in 1955 as a homeowner’s and business insurance agent within Mount Greenwood Bank on the Southside of Chicago, IL. He called his business John C. Comiskey and Company.

In 1960, the business’s trajectory took a significant turn when the bank partnership dissolved and Jack Comiskey joined with two other partners, Raymond Eastman and Daniel Seymen, to form ESCO General Insurance Agency. They then established their office in the largest south suburb of Chicago, Oak Lawn, IL. This dynamic trio excelled in selling residential and commercial insurance, steadily building a loyal clientele.

By 1968, Ray and Daniel had sold their portions to Jack, making him the sole owner of ESCO Insurance Agency. The Comiskey family tradition continued when Jack’s son, John Comiskey Jr., acquired his insurance license and became an integral part of the business. In 1976, Jack retired, passing the reins of the agency to his son, John.

1976 - 2010

Under John’s leadership, the agency expanded its reach and moved to a larger office in Oak Lawn in 1978. ESCO continued to grow and thrive. Throughout the years, John’s four daughters, Beth, Amy, Meggan and Joanne worked part-time while pursuing their higher education.

After graduating from Northern Illinois University in 2001, Joanne developed a genuine interest in the insurance industry. She also enjoyed the pride of the agency’s service and enjoyed working alongside her father. At this time, Joanne became licensed and decided to join her father and eventually became the sole sales agent.

2010 - 2024

By 2010, ESCO began to move further southwest to Mokena and eventually Joliet, IL. During this time, Meggan rejoined ESCO as customer service representative and quickly became an asset in maintaining the relationships with longtime clients and all prospective new clients with her winning attitude.

ESCO became a member of the Joliet Chamber of Commerce, Working Women’s Group and Friday’s Business Builders. As the rest of the world did on March 13, 2020, Joanne and Meggan packed up their office essentials and began to work from home, quickly adapting to this new way of work and happily succeeding at the same time.

Joanne and her husband Todd made a decision to accelerate their retirement plans of moving to the mountains and took the opportunity to expand the business to Western North Carolina.

With Joanne and Meggan’s optimism through all of the moves and changes, ESCO has maintained relationships with generations of clients and feel honored to continue to give their great customer service to customers old and new.

After all of the years of supporting Joanne’s role in ESCO, Todd Winkler joined the team in 2023. With his knowledge of sales, Todd assists in growing the business as we have continued to do so in North Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana and Arizona.

Both Joanne and Todd are now active board members of the Fairview Business Association in Fairview, NC and look forward to serving their community in many ways for years to come. ESCO truly is a family and we are always willing to give you our best through honesty, hard work and integrity.

“We hope you too will feel like family.”
