When to File an Insurance Claim

Not every scrape, ding or mishap needs to go through insurance.

Unlike health insurance, when everything gets filed first and decided upon later, filing everything with your auto and home carrier will not be in your favor. If you call the company directly, most likely you are opening a claim, intended or not.  If you’re facing major damage, theft or a situation where you might be held responsible, that’s when filing a claim makes sense.

For smaller fixes that cost close to your deductible, it’s usually easier—and sometimes cheaper in the long run—to handle it out of pocket. Filing too often will drive up your premiums and put your policy at risk. If you’re unsure whether something is covered, that’s the time to pick up the phone and talk with your agent. A quick conversation can save you from bigger headaches later.
